MY CLEANING RAMPAGE WITH thredUP

Happy Monday! By now you probably know that I’m somewhat of an avid vintage/thrift connoisseur with goals of becoming one of the most interesting grandmothers known for her luminous collection of clothing and accessories; never known for her ability to “Marie Kondo.”

Picture a scene similar to that of the rare bird that is Iris Apfel’s NYC home filled with treasures galore. I aim to be the Caribbean version, being careful not to crossover into the hoarder category because this girl surely has the ability to do so!

With that in mind, I often try to clear out some of my closet via donation or selling on third party sites/apps but recently I haven’t had much time to list new items on those sites so I ended up with a huge storage box full of shoes, clothing and a few accessories.

I’ve also been trying to automate/simplify aspects of my life so I decided to give thredUP a try. I originally found out about this company back in 2015 and thought it was a genius idea. I even ordered a bag then but never got around to using it but that changes today!

So what exactly is thredUP? Well in their own words, “thredUP is the world’s largest fashion resale marketplace with over 35k brands—from Gap to Gucci—at up to 90% off retail prices.“

As you will see, the process for clearing out your closet with thredUP is fairly simple, so let’s get into that!

First, you’ll need to download the app if doing this on your phone. Navigate to My Account under the selling tab, you place a free order/request for the bag. Delivery can take a couple weeks depending on the details of your order so be patient.

The clean out bag arrives in a cute little envelope and includes a quick mini guide/checklist on what’s accepted by thredUP and how to pack & ship the bag back. The entire process is super simple but do note thredUP only accepts certain brands and you can find that extensive approved list here. There is also an option to have them donate items on your behalf to places like the Salvation Army, which is pretty cool in my opinion.

After you pack and seal your bag, all you need to do is drop it off at your local USPS and wait for thredUP to update you on the progress. I’m sending mine out this week and will keep you updated in a subsequent post on what that process is like. I assume it will be fairly straightforward and simple but I’ll keep you posted!
