There is a saying that goes, “You can tek de gyal out de Island but yuh cyant tek de Island out de gyal!” Well, I’m pretty sure I just made that one up but can you blame me?

Recently, I was thinking about how long I’ve been living in the U.S and couldn’t believe it’s been well over 10 years since I moved from Guyana to NYC. Time flies, yet I remember it as if it were yesterday! Okay, truly I remember it because I remember what I wore to travel but that's a story for another day.

You're probably wondering what any of that has to do with today’s post so let me get to it. I recently came across this cute tee via my blogger babe Caribbean Cowgirl and fell in love. She’s been rocking some real cute tees recently so when I found out they were from a small business called Funk Era located in Charlotte, North Carolina I knew I had to support and snag one! As you know, I love supporting small businesses and this one was a plus because it reflected my Caribbean culture. Big ups to all my Caribbean people dem, especially the owner of this shop!

Fun fact: Guyana is geographically located in South America but we are caribbean culturally so while we’re not technically an island, I grew up eating, wining, limin’ & sportin’ like an island gyal!

Thanks for sharing this shop with me LaNatria aka Caribbean Cowgirl and even more thanks for the discount code. It's carib10 for 10% off y'all, so run don't walk to If you’re wondering, checkout and shipping were a breeze and as for the actual tee, the colors are vibrant and the fabric is very soft and stretchy. I would suggest sizing down for a  more fitted look. I wish I did but next time I’ll def do so. See I found an excuse to get another tee already! My other favorites are linked at the end of this post for you!

My skirt is a vintage banana leaf button front skirt I got earlier this year from a lovely Etsy shop called Comin In Haute. I twisted the skirt so the button could sit on top my leg for a different look and left a few open for some Summer sizzle. My heels are last year from Zara, my watermelon purse is actually a picnic basket I use as a purse and you can read more about it here. Bangles are a mix of beaded african bangles and the other is a Macaw hinge bracelet. Sunnies are Dolce Gabbana banana leaf print and my Bougainvillea hoops are handmade by yours truly!
