DIY (LATE) HALLOWEEN COSTUME- LOLA FLORES PART 1

Hello darlings! I’m continuing my tardy to the Halloween costume party posts and today I’m highlighting the fierce & fiery Lola Flores!

Similar to my Lola Falana costume, I initially set out to do this one last year and shared some sneak peeks/inspiration behind the costume on Instagram. I’m well over a year late with delivering these costumes but intitially I wanted to do a red/polka-dot & roses look however, by the time this year rolled around I was undecided and figured I’d do an Instagram poll to help me decide.

The results were close but a higher percentage of you voted in favor of the yellow dress so this look is an ode to Lola’s “Mi Alegre Sombrero” performance.

Lola Flores was a Spanish singer, dancer and actor born María Dolores Flores Ruiz on January 21st, 1923 in the southern Spanish town of Jerez de la Frontera.

Flores grew up poor and earned pocket money by singing in the local bars as early as the age of 10. In the1950s and 1960s she rose to fame in her native country and across Mexico as well as the U.S.

The first film she appeared in was called "Martingala" and she became known as "La Faraona", as the1955 namesake film premiered. She was also called "Lola de España" and published about 50 records, in which she interpreted rumbas, rancheras, coplas, and flamenco; performed with a her signature style that envelops much passion and emotion.

In1991 Lola was imprisoned for tax fraud and was also fined for failing to declare her income between 1982 and 1985. Lola’s favorite hobby was painting and there has been exhibitions of her work in Spain and America. She married guitarist Antonio González and they had three children (Lolita, Antonio and Rosario).

In 1995 Lola Flores died at the age of 72 from a long battle with breast cancer. Many mourners crowded the streets of Madrid, waiting for the coffin to go by and sang "La Zarzamora", which was one of her favorite songs.

For this costume, I used accessories I already had on hand along with an authentic flamenco dress that was made in Spain. The hairstyle with sideburn-like curls/swoops, dark 60s cat-eye makeup and face mole were essential at capturing and portraying the essence of La Faraona!
