It's almost Valentine's and if you're picking out your outfit, I'd like to challenge you to step outside the red/pink box and try something different. As you know I love me some pink & red but this Valentine's I wanted to mix it up a bit.

Enter the Bumble Bee with it's black and yellow stripes!

The inspiration for this look actually came from a simple pair of Bumble Bee earrings I got at Target years ago. Now head below the jump to see the full look!

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS IN SOHO

A few weeks prior to Christmas (can you believe it's already over?), I ventured to my old stomping ground in SoHo. I was finally able to visited Society Social's, 73 Spring Shop popup after not being able to make it the last 2 years. I also did a bit of vintage shopping, thrifting and eating as well and wanted to share a few of the photos with you. I'm feeling a little lazy today, so I'm not going to write much.

I am off from work and should only be watching classic movies and eating ice cream but with all the holiday festivities, I didn't get a chance to share the images with you, especially those of the pop-up shop. Do enjoy and now back to Move Over, Darling and ginger ice cream (I made myself).

VINTAGE SILK & TASSELS: A LOVE DOLL SHOPPE COLLABORATION

Oh how I love vintage! I can't get enough and truly believe there is no such thing as too much vintage. I thoroughly enjoy exploring vintage and thrift shops because it's like going on a treasure hunt every single time. You never know what you'll come across and I never stop until the Vintage Lover in me is satisfied. Did I mention I don't believe in having too much vintage? I'm serious!

I love how unique and well made vintage pieces are and the attention to detail sweeps me off my feet every single time. When I walk into a good vintage shop, my heart rate increases and my adrenaline starts pumping. While I enjoy well curated boutiques for modern pieces, my preference in vintage shops is the opposite. I like my vintage stores retro-looking and filled to the brim with goodies as this makes vintage shopping even more of an adventure for me. The thought of sifting through racks, jammed packed with treats and finding that one piece or ten or twenty (don't judge) that reflects my personal style is always rewarding.

If you're like me, you could spend most of your days vintage treasure-hunting but that takes time and I often don't have much time with my packed agenda. Visiting shops in person can be quite challenging, so hows vintage-lover survive? Have no fear! I'm making vintage shopping a bit easier for those with little time or those not inclined to hunt.

DIY LAST MINUTE COSTUME - SOPHIA LOREN IN ARABESQUE

For my second Halloween DIY (see first here)  this year, I decided to head back to the 60's and channel the lovely Sophia Loren from the 1966 Technicolor comedy thriller Arabesque

Loren is an award winning Italian film actress who was declared as "one of the world cinema's treasures." Sophia who recently turned 82 years old in September is as glamorous as ever and recently starred in Dolce Gabbana's new fragrance film.

I like to refer to the scene I used from Arabesque as the pink towel & toile scene. Recreating the look is easy as pie. If you've never watched this film take a look here and skip to the 14:05 mark to view the pink towel & toile decor glam.

DIY HALLOWEEN COSUME - LENA HORNE IN BROADWAY RHYTHM

Last Halloween, I created a DIY costume based off Dorothy Dandridge’s character in the 1954 American musical film Carmen Jones as a way to honor her work. This year, I wanted to continue in the same vein; paying homage to women of color in the arts and creative world.

I chose to highlight the ever-talented Lena Horne for this year’s DIY costume. You can learn more about Lena, the inspiration behind this look and how to create it yourself over on Blavity

GROOVY GOOD VIBRATIONS ✌🏾️

Well folks, I'm slowly easing my way out of denial that Summer is over. The first official day of Fall is this Thursday and no amount of crying will change that. So what's a girl to do? The weather is already cooling down and as a last hurrah I decided to do an end of Summer look that works well for the slight chill in the air. Let's face it, Winter is the one I have quarrels with.

Join Mildred (my #RetroAlterEgo) and I on our last Summer Sixteen stroll in NYC decked out in a playful look inspired by Archie/Betty & Veronica comics with a 70's vibe.

LADYBUG LOVE 🐞❀️

Hello love bugs! I hope you had a good weekend. Have you ever found yourself saving your pieces for a special occasion or do you refuse to wear a look until you get the perfect accessory? Putting together a look is a creative process for me as well as a way to express myself. Much like my DIY projects or when I'm decorating an event or space; I have a vision and won't stop until that vision comes to life. Do you do this when putting together a look or creative project? Can't stop, won't stop!

CLASSIC WOMAN - PINAFORES, BOWS & RUFFLES

Oh how I love the Summer! I never want to say goodbye to warm temperatures, tropical prints and frozen drinks but even when I cry into my cocktail glass, the seasons never listen to me!

We're now a month away from Fall and I'm trying to make peace (kinda, sorta) and simply embrace the transition because I really don't have many quarrels with Fall except it indicates #WinterIsComing and that's when my tantrums are amplified.

During the early days of Fall, I enjoy that you can get away with wearing some of your Summer pieces, especially  pants and maxi dresses. Today I'm sharing a transitional look that can be worn on a cool Summer evening or early Fall day.

Click through for all the details and you know I'm hooking you up with resources to re-create this look!

MAGICAL DRESS!

A couple of months ago, Mom and I were out on the town for a girl's day at the Metropolitan Museum and decided to venture into a few stores to browse around after the museum. Of course, browsing turned into shopping as soon as Mom pointed me in the direction of this piece! I was immediately attracted to the abstract floral-like pattern and bright colors. The piece also reminded me of my sequin flower heels I purchased in the Spring.

Mom and I went straight to the rack and to our surprise this dress was not a dress but a romper instead! Can someone say magical!!!! We were already sold, then we noticed more magic in the form of pockets ! The deal was signed, sealed and delivered on the spot. Well, a card was swiped and a receipt was delivered!

Click through to see how I styled this colorful romper and how you can re-create the look!

MILDRED'S RETRO PLAY-DAY

Hi Darlings! I had an activity-filled day on Sunday starting with a quick SoHo stroll for burgers, fries and rice pudding, a trip to Coney Island for some fun in the sun and snow cones, then a Soca party where I danced the night away (until I got really sleepy at 9:30pm, lol)! What a day, what a day!

I also posted a handful of vids and pics of my day on Snapchat and Instagram (IG stories too) so be sure to follow along for all the fun!

It's no secret, I love summer days and more importantly I love to let the girl in me play! I think it's so important to schedule consistent play days in your life, especially as women.  A play day is simply that; a  special time dedicated to having fun in a child-like manner. We can get pretty busy with our grown-up lives and never imagined the independent, stay up late, do whatever you want adult life would entail not so glam activities such as feeding yourself, waking up early to get to work or paying many adult bills. I strongly believe in taking a break from a busy lifestyle to do something you enjoyed as a child. Sometimes I color, ride my bicycle or produce a full-fledged music video in my room to Beyonce's Ego. This "music video" usually involves sequins, heels, a scene rolling across the bed with me singing, "I got a big ego, such a huge #RetroAlterEgo! I walk like this 'cus I can back it up!"  It's my time to relax and be silly.

Speaking of egos, Mildred (my #RetroAlterEgo) decided to do a little playing herself while at Coney Island! Click through to see her latest threads and how you can recreate this retro play-day look for your next summer outing.
