DIY - FRUITY SHOE CLIPS

Fruits are hot this season and can be found on everything from hair accessories to clothing to handbags to shoes. Our beloved healthy treats are now a fashion statement and to many vintage-lovers (especially the tropical fanatics, I'll call no names), this "trend" has been a summer staple.

With the explosion of fruit salad everywhere, comes the price tag to match the trend. Not so fun, but hey girl hey, I have a DIY for you on the low low!

DIY - VINTAGE SCARF STRAP FOR YOUR BAG

Basket bags are all the rage this season and I've been admiring all the various modern styles that are popping up. I have a soft spot for them and a (not so) small collection consisting of mostly vintage ones mixed with a few modern styles in various shapes, colors and materials.

They're the perfect statement accessory and are versatile enough to transition throughout the seasons but there can be a downside to these pretty pieces.

Basket bags often come with short top handles and no shoulder strap which can become annoying when you're doing activities that require both hands such as vintage shopping or sampling ice cream at a food festival.

While doing both activities (not at the same time although that would be dreamy), I decided to turn my vintage silk scarf into a shoulder strap for my modern wicker bucket bag

DIY - TROPICAL MACAW HEELS

Last Spring my bestie and I came across a beautiful pair of Parrot Heels from Kate Spade and couldn't get them off our minds. As we waited and hoped they would go on sale, I was inspired to DIY a Macaw version of my own.  Yes, you can make these heels yourself!!!

I shared a teaser a few months ago on IG but actually created this DIY about a year ago when I got the patches.  I initially shared it with my family in our group chat and my big sister gave me the great idea to do something additional. I got stuck on the idea and held off from sharing the tutorial while I tried to source additional supplies. I still haven't found the right supplies but with the recent parrot craze popping up in the fashion world, I figured I might as well share the initial DIY with you. This way you can get the look in time for Summer.

DIY LAST MINUTE COSTUME - SOPHIA LOREN IN ARABESQUE

For my second Halloween DIY (see first here)  this year, I decided to head back to the 60's and channel the lovely Sophia Loren from the 1966 Technicolor comedy thriller Arabesque

Loren is an award winning Italian film actress who was declared as "one of the world cinema's treasures." Sophia who recently turned 82 years old in September is as glamorous as ever and recently starred in Dolce Gabbana's new fragrance film.

I like to refer to the scene I used from Arabesque as the pink towel & toile scene. Recreating the look is easy as pie. If you've never watched this film take a look here and skip to the 14:05 mark to view the pink towel & toile decor glam.

DIY HALLOWEEN COSUME - LENA HORNE IN BROADWAY RHYTHM

Last Halloween, I created a DIY costume based off Dorothy Dandridge’s character in the 1954 American musical film Carmen Jones as a way to honor her work. This year, I wanted to continue in the same vein; paying homage to women of color in the arts and creative world.

I chose to highlight the ever-talented Lena Horne for this year’s DIY costume. You can learn more about Lena, the inspiration behind this look and how to create it yourself over on Blavity

DIY - ART-INSPIRED PAINTED MIRROR

My latest  DIY home decor project is live on about.com and is inspired by the work of artist by the name of Chad Wys. His art fascinated me and I found myself poring through his collections and ordered one of his prints online.

I was captivated by his use of modern, geometric patterns juxtaposed against very traditional artwork. I've always enjoyed the mix of modern and vintage in my home (as well as in my closet) which is probably why Wys’ work struck a chord with me so quickly and pretty soon I had the urge to do a little creating of my own.

Head over to the post on about.com to see how you can create this art-inspired DIY for your walls.

DIY - MATCHING POM POM SANDALS & BAG CHARM

Pom poms, like tassels have been a long time favorite of mine and recently they've been trending like crazy. You can find them on clothing, pillows, bags, blankets, shoes and even jewelry!

Earlier this season I created a video for some simple colorful DIY pom pom heels and today I'm sharing another tutorial for pom pom shoes with a matching bag charm. You've probably seen the trendy brightly colored pom pom sandals around but for this DIY I wanted to mix things up a bit. I decided to use muted colors that would go well with my 4+ year old tan leather sandals. This is a good way to refresh a pair of shoes that you've had for some time.

The basket bags are also very popular with pom pom adornments so I decided to create a matching pom pom bag charm for my vintage basket tote.

You can complete this simple DIY in a weekend and wow your friends with your matching set! So what are you waiting on? Let's get started below the jump!

DIY - WOVEN INSPIRED WALL HANGING

Hello darlings! I trust you're having a good day. As you probably know already, I create a monthly DIY article for About.com focused on home decor projects. I really enjoy doing these projects but sometimes my busy schedule doesn't permit me to get as elaborate with my craft projects as I'd like. I work a "9-5" so I'm often trying to squeeze in as much creative time when I leave work and on the weekends. For this reason, I try to keep my projects as simple as possible. I imagine your life is pretty busy as well so I keep that in mind when putting together these projects. I want you to be able to complete the DIY and be happy with your final piece!

I made this simple woven-inspired wall hanging for the month of May and it took me about 15 minutes altogether. This piece can add a pop of color and texture as well as an interesting, handmade design element to your space.
